The
Shadows of Pandemic: Bali's Avian Culture
When the first human case of Avian Influenza
found in Bali on August 2007, the world focused more of its
attention to Indonesia, a country which topped the list of
countries with confirmed human avian flu cases.
Present day, with over a year passed without a new human case
of AI in Bali, a continuing danger still follows closely in
shadows. With approximately 12 millions livestock of fowl,
Bali is a strategic spot where new types of H5N1 can develop,
which can lead to a deadly flu pandemic.
The intimate relations of its people with fowls and putting
it in a dense and small island, the shadows of pandemic is
threatening, shadows which seemingly unseen but very real.
